VIDEO REVIEW: Lady Gaga, "Alejandro" (Interscope Records) OK…I get it with the whole “pushing the envelope” to prove she’s a real artist. I even get it that she wants to “stand up for the gay community”. That’s the community that rules the dance charts and has given Gaga a spot on top of the music scene. Here’s where you lost me… The video is confusing, poorly edited and doesn’t do what Gaga and her director say they set out to do. Showcasing stereotypical gay guys and equally stereotypically religious symbols and characters behaving stereotypically, does nothing to promote anything but exploitation. Haven’t we already seen all of this done much more masterfully 20 years ago by the one Gaga is copying? If this is indeed yet another Gaga “tribute” to Madonna, shouldn’t she hold herself to a higher standard to tell an understandable story? Madge did a lot in her quest to show her artistry. Shouldn’t we as consumers hold Gaga to a standard that says give us something new, unique or at least original? I am a fan of Gaga’s poppy catchy tunes but the exploitation of gays and the religious is meaningless here and should have been thought out before exposing us to this. Even as a fan I have to ask… how long will we lift Lady G up before we tire of the cookie-cutter formula copying of a great 80s artist who already did this stuff? It’s time for her to put out a video that says something. Or at least is her own. ---badboy88

CD REVIEW: Herb Alpert, "Whipped Cream And Other Delights - rewhipped" -- I love remixes. I love to check out the latest reworkings of classics and current hits. Remixes can make you dance, often gives you the interest to make you go back to check out the original. This remix collection works sometimes. The title track Whipped Creme is one of those. Remixer Anthony Marinelli did a lovely job of bringing the original up to the current while still retaining its integrity. After a couple of listens I couldn’t resist- I had to go back and order the original track from the 1960s recording. What fun! Many other cuts did something to enjoy but the direction seems to have watered down some of the charm the original had. I was not yet born when the first record was released so I don’t feel the tone of the country and the times. But when I listen to Alpert’s music I get a sense this was a time when musicians really played an instrument and a record was a record. It was a time when real musicians gathered in rooms to contribute to a huge sound that would never be exactly duplicated because of so many individuals adding their own flavor to a stew that would become a soundtrack to their generation’s lives. Fast forward to the REWHIPPED collection. This showcases the remixing of several top guys of today including Medeski, DJ Foosh, Ozmatli and Martin & Wood, along with many others. All the tracks from this collection were included in the original release “Whipped Cream And Other Delights” by Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass (1966). Mr. Alpert performed new solos for 7 of the rewhipped versions. There are many new vocals added to make it feel current. Each has a particular charm about it. But as charged as I am about remixed music I can’t help wonder why we need to revisit those songs without simply re-releasing the original that was so good to begin with. My recommendation is to purchase the bundle of the Rewhipped and Originals together. It makes for a lovely audio experience. ---review by waltzingsheila
